I've been trying to get myself to garden for years. I need to eat more fruits and vegetables. I need to exercise more. I need to stop driving all over town to buy groceries that rot within days of purchase. I need to be more green. I really needed to remove a big, ugly patch of concrete that, in it's day, served as a patio.
So, I paid a guy who was soliciting contracting work in the neighborhood $950.00 to demolish and haul away the concrete (did I mention that it was a BIG slab?), and I am in the process of sifting the top layer of dirt to get all the "concrete crumbs". I have spent some other money, but I am trying hard not to let this project turn into another, "let's start a new hobby, spend a whole bunch of money on it, and then lose interest within weeks" kind of adventure. I bought a small cedar potting bench, a composting drum, and some of those corner-thingies for making a raised bed. (We have heavy clay soil here in my little piece of The OC.)
So, with the demolition done, I'm hoping to be able to work this winter to prepare the beds, so that I can plant in the spring. I'll be updating (mostly on the weekends), and hopefully somebody will read it and help me out when I get stuck.
Here are the basics:
Total dimensions - 24 feet by 24 feet
Orientation - Southeast
Potential issues - Not enough sun (it's northwest of the house, so no morning sun to speak of), clay soil, JannerB's laziness. That last one is the biggest one.

Potential benefits - exercize, fresh produce, less driving, known source of produce, potential for contribution to local food banks.
